No going back on January 1 tax law takeoff — Tinubu

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to launching the Nigeria Tax Act and Tax Administration Act on January 1, 2026. This confirmation followed a high-level briefing between President Bola Tinubu and the tax reform committee in Lagos. Officials insist the schedule remains firm to ensure the planned economic benefits and structural overhauls reach the public without further delay.

Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, emphasized that the laws prioritize relief for the vulnerable. He stated, “The plans to commence the remaining two laws on January 1st, 2026, will go ahead because the reforms are designed to provide relief for the majority of Nigerians,” noting that 98% of workers will benefit.

The implementation proceeds amidst a legislative storm over alleged unauthorized alterations to the gazetted versions of the bills. While the National Assembly has ordered a re-gazetting to ensure accuracy, the executive remains focused on the rollout. Oyedele concluded, “We believe that over time, you get revenue from growth,” dismissing immediate revenue generation as the primary objective of these reforms.
