Ghana arrests 48 Nigerians over online fraud, romance scams

Ghanaian authorities say 48 Nigerian nationals arrested on the outskirts of Accra are involved in online fraud. The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, disclosed this in a post on X on Wednesday, stating that the suspects were apprehended during a coordinated nighttime operation in the Dawhenya area of the Ningo-Prampram Constituency.

According to George, the raid was led by the Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with National Security and the Ghana Police Service. “Those arrested are believed to be Nigerian nationals, based on preliminary interrogation, comprising 46 males and two females,” he said, adding that they are linked to romance scams, online investment fraud, impersonation schemes and illicit online gold trading.

He said items recovered included 54 laptops, 39 mobile phones, a Starlink internet device and eight MTN TurboNet routers. George noted that the operation forms part of broader efforts to safeguard Ghana’s digital and financial space. “We are committed to carrying out intelligence-led surgical strikes against these crime syndicates,” he said.
