A fire outbreak on Christmas Eve at the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, left seven people injured, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
The blaze, which started around 5p.m., spread from the fourth floor and affected nearby buildings including the Radio Nigeria complex, Oluwole Plaza, a mosque and adjoining properties.
LASEMA spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, said on Thursday that seven adult males sustained burn injuries and were taken to hospital after receiving initial treatment from paramedics.
Five others were treated on-site for smoke inhalation. Emergency teams issued evacuation alerts as the fire spread across the area.
Okunbor confirmed that the fire had been brought under control and adjoining buildings were largely salvaged. He said the affected Radio Nigeria building was fully extinguished while dampening-down operations continued to prevent re-ignition. Safety assessments are ongoing in the impacted locations.
