Bloody Christmas: Benue community hit by suspected herders’ attack, five dead

At least five people were feared dead after suspected armed herders attacked Ortese community along the Igyungu Aze–Yogbo road in Guma LGA of Benue State. Several residents were injured, and others were reportedly abducted and taken to unknown locations.

Local youths have launched search operations as more residents remain missing. The incident comes two days after a similar attack in Daudu where two people were killed.

Victims identified so far include Solo Uchi from Tse Hagher, Iorlaha from Orogbo, and Tersoo Uker from Tse Uker. A resident said the attack was terrifying and ongoing searches may uncover more casualties.

“What we have seen so far is frightening… so far five bodies have been recovered, but we believe more may still be found as several people remain unaccounted for,” a community member said.

Residents alleged the attackers blocked the Ortese–Yogbo road, ambushing people on the highway and in nearby bushes. “They blocked the road completely and started shooting,” a youth leader claimed. Panic has spread across the area, with families fleeing their homes.

Police spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet could not be reached for comment.
