Adichie denies visiting professor appointment at UNN

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has denied claims that she was appointed a visiting professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), contradicting an earlier announcement by the institution. The university had named the celebrated author alongside Kevin Urama of the African Development Bank as newly appointed visiting professors.

UNN said the appointments were conveyed through separate letters dated December 18, signed by the vice-chancellor, Simon Ortuanya. The university’s acting spokesperson added that Adichie’s appointment would enhance teaching and scholarship through lectures, academic engagements, and mentorship of students and young scholars.

However, Adichie dismissed the claim, saying she neither received any appointment letter nor held discussions with the university. Her media aide, Omawumi Ogbe, described the reports as inaccurate and misleading.

“It has come to our attention that several news outlets are reporting that Ms. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and we wish to state categorically that this information is entirely false,” Ogbe said. She added that Adichie holds UNN in high esteem but was never in talks regarding a professorship.
