Cross River APC expels former chairman over legal action against party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has expelled its embattled former chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, and suspended State Special Leader Dr. Juliet Ebuo Diwa. The decisions were announced Monday following a meeting of the APC State Caretaker Committee at the party secretariat. Publicity Secretary Emmanuel Edem Inyang confirmed both disciplinary actions in an official statement.

Eba’s expulsion invoked Article 21.5(v) of the APC Constitution, amended March 26, 2022, which mandates automatic expulsion for members who file lawsuits against the party without exhausting internal dispute mechanisms. “The constitutional provision stipulates that any member who institutes legal action against the party or any of its officers on matters relating to party affairs, without first exhausting internal dispute resolution mechanisms, automatically stands expelled upon filing such action,” the statement said. Vice Chairman Dr. Abubakar Efoli moved the motion, seconded by Youth Leader Dr. Joseph Idagu Ogar.

The committee upheld Diwa’s suspension over alleged misconduct following a petition from Boki LGA APC Chairman Kelvin Njong, who accused her of assaulting ward chairman James Abang. Her suspension remains effective pending the disciplinary committee’s investigation. The statement noted no appeal for Eba would be considered unless he withdraws his court action against the party.
