Accidental Bombing: NAF donates cash, relief materials to Sokoto victims

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has donated cash assistance and relief materials to victims of the 2024 accidental airstrike in Sokoto State.

The incident occurred on December 25, 2024, during a joint operation under Operation Fansan Yamma targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group, when civilians were mistakenly bombed in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities of Silame Local Government Area.

At least 13 civilians were killed and several others injured in the strike. Presenting the donation on Wednesday, the Chief of Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Edward Gabkwet, described the incident as unfortunate and sympathised with the victims and the state government. He said NAF had taken responsibility for compensating losses.

“The incident was not intentional. It was a mistake that happened during an operation targeting criminal elements in the area on a quite calculated plan,” Mr Aneke said.

Governor Ahmad Aliyu disclosed that the state earlier provided N20 million and medical support, and announced an additional N35 million donation to affected families.
