Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has demanded that the ongoing corruption probe against him be transferred from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to another investigative body. He made the demand in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Mohammed Doka.
Mr Malami faulted the “continued involvement” of EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede, describing it as “legally untenable, morally indefensible, and constitutionally impermissible.” He demanded “the immediate recusal of the EFCC chairman from all matters relating to Abubakar Malami, SAN,” and called for the attorney-general’s intervention to move the case to a neutral authority.
He argued that Mr Olukoyede previously served as secretary to the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which investigated the EFCC during his tenure as AGF. According to him, the EFCC’s actions amount to “retaliatory persecution driven by historical animosity and personal vendetta,” adding that he is willing to face a neutral probe and be tried only before a competent court.
