The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over plans to resume enforcement of the suspended tinted glass permit policy from January 2, 2026.
The NBA said the move undermines the authority of the court, as the legality of the policy is currently before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where judgment has been reserved.
In a statement signed by its president, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the NBA said the IGP is constitutionally bound to respect the judicial process and avoid actions that may pre-empt the court’s decision. It noted that the suit, instituted by its public interest arm, challenges the police’s authority to impose fees under the policy, describing it as “unconstitutional, illegal, extortionate, and a threat to citizens’ rights.”
The NBA also cited an existing court order directing parties to maintain the status quo and said enforcement was earlier suspended by mutual agreement pending court outcomes. It accused the police of “a troubling disregard for the rule of law” and warned it would initiate contempt proceedings if enforcement resumes.
The association also directed its branches to provide legal support to affected citizens.
