Airfares will drop if multiple taxes are removed – United Nigeria Chairman

United Nigeria Airlines chairman Obiorah Okonkwo has urged the National Assembly to address what he described as excessive taxation on domestic airlines, saying the charges significantly inflate ticket prices.

Speaking at the launch of commercial operations at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Airport, he said airlines face “about 18 taxes on one single ticket,” noting that reducing them would make air travel more affordable.

Okonkwo advised travellers to buy tickets early for lower fares and welcomed ongoing legislative efforts to ease the tax burden. His comments come as the Senate summons Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo over rising domestic airfares, which the minister attributed to aircraft shortages and inadequate maintenance facilities.

ECOWAS also announced plans to abolish air ticket taxes from January 2026 to reduce fares across West Africa.
