Reps summon Finance, Budget Ministers over poor budget execution

The House of Representatives has summoned Finance Minister Wale Edun and Budget and National Planning Minister Atiku Bagudu over poor implementation of the 2024 and 2025 budgets.

The lawmakers on Tuesday held a closed-door session with the ministers, the Accountant-General, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, and FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, focusing on failure to release funds for already executed capital projects. “Projects executed have not been paid for, and this is really embarrassing,” a lawmaker said.

Following the meeting, the House resolved not to consider the 2026 Appropriation Bill until outstanding contractor payments are cleared and suspended deliberations on 42 bills and multiple committee reports. “Members were so angry that they vowed not to consider the 2026 Appropriation Bill,” the source added.

Ogunjimi requested 48 hours to address payments. Billy Osawaru urged prioritised disbursement, while Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda said, “The only solution is for a commencement of full implementation of the budgets.”
