Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau state is reportedly finalising plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) before January 2026. Sources said President Bola Tinubu has approved the move, but some APC members mostly former PDP defectors are opposing the switch and have threatened to return to the PDP. APC national chairman, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, has since held several meetings to calm tensions.
Mutfwang previously told a gathering in Jos that he was under pressure to join the APC, saying, “only two people can authorise me to change my party one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people.” Recent defections have reshaped national politics, with Osun governor Ademola Adeleke joining Accord, while Taraba governor Agbu Kefas is expected to follow APC soon. The ruling party currently controls 26 states.
