The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region, citing recent coups and failed mutinies. President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, announced the measure on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja. He emphasized the need for immediate introspection regarding democracy and regional security.
Touray stated the developments underscore the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.” The emergency declaration signals heightened vigilance and coordinated action by member states to safeguard political stability across West Africa. Further details are expected as the situation develops.
