The Communist Party of Benin condemned the foreign military intervention by France and Nigeria that reportedly thwarted a recent coup attempt against President Patrice Talon, arguing the intervention is an insult to sovereignty and that the coup was the logical result of Talon’s allegedly autocratic governance.
The Communist Party of Benin (PCB) has strongly condemned what it calls “Franco-Nigerian intervention” following the aborted coup d’état on Sunday, December 7, 2025. The party alleged the attempt to overthrow President Patrice Talon was thwarted by French forces and air strikes from Nigerian fighter jets, raising serious questions about the nation’s sovereignty. The PCB denounced the foreign military action, demanding the “immediate departure of the foreign forces of aggression.”
While opposing military takeovers, the PCB blamed the Talon administration’s “disastrous management” and “fascist dictatorship” for creating the discontent that fueled the coup attempt. The party stated: “The December 7 coup attempt is the logical consequence of the disastrous management of the ‘Rupture’ government, characterised by predation, fascist dictatorship, exclusion, and repeated institutional coups d’état since 2016.” The PCB views the reported foreign support as “an insult and humiliation” and an effective placement of Benin “under supervision.”
