Benin Republic Presidency on coup attempt: Regular army is regaining control… UPDATED

Military personnel in Benin on Sunday announced that they had ousted President Patrice Talon, although his entourage said he was safe and the army was regaining control.

Soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR), said on state television that they had met and decided that “Mr Patrice Talon is removed from office as president of the republic”.

The Benin Republic presidency says Patrice Talon is safe and the “regular” army is regaining control, after a group of soldiers announced a coup early Sunday.

Gunshots were heard near Talon’s residence as armoured vehicles deployed in the presidential palace patrolled the perimeter.

The Benin Republic presidency has confirmed that President Patrice Talon is safe following a coup attempt early Sunday.

A group of soldiers had announced the overthrow of the government, prompting concerns over stability in the West African nation. “The regular army is regaining control,” the presidency said, signaling efforts to restore order after the sudden unrest.

Gunshots were reportedly heard near Talon’s residence as armoured vehicles patrolled the presidential palace precinct.

The security forces’ visible presence appears aimed at deterring further escalation and ensuring the president’s safety amid the tense situation. Citizens and observers are monitoring developments closely.
