Nigeria lacks AI-ready data centers

Digital Realty Nigeria’s CEO has revealed that the country currently lacks the specialized data center infrastructure required for core AI workloads and is likely two to three years away from achieving domestic capacity.

Engr. Ike Nnamani, CEO of Digital Realty Nigeria, has stated that the country currently lacks data centers capable of supporting core Artificial Intelligence workloads. Speaking at a NITRA roundtable, Nnamani clarified that while existing local facilities handle cloud services, they lack the specific design required for high-density AI infrastructure. “The closest we have today in terms of data centre infrastructure are facilities that can run cloud services. But when it comes to core AI, none of the data centres in Nigeria was designed for that,” he said.
Nnamani emphasized that achieving AI readiness requires facilities built with advanced cooling and power capabilities, a feat likely two to three years away. He noted the necessity of international operators to bridge this gap, citing South Africa’s recent advancements in liquid-cooled systems. He argued that Nigeria needs new centers “designed from day one to support AI infrastructure and services,” adding, “That is where global players like Digital Realty come in… they have the financial muscle to do it.”
