Martin Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Fifteen other assembly members also made the switch, citing internal party division.
The defection follows a state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in March. The measure suspended Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and the members of the State Assembly.
