Obafemi Awolowo University mourns the passing of its Pro-Chancellor, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, describing his death as a monumental loss and praising his profound contributions to the institution and national scholarship.
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has confirmed the death of its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, calling it a monumental blow to the institution. In a statement signed by Public Relations Officer Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, the university noted that the news has left staff, students, alumni, and friends devastated. Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire expressed deep sorrow, describing the late Pro-Chancellor as “a towering intellectual, a rare patriot, and a man whose presence brought wisdom, depth, and stability to every table he sat at,” and further noting, “Professor Siyan Oyeweso was not only a scholar of continental reputation; he was a gentleman of uncommon grace, humility, and dignity.
His dedication to Obafemi Awolowo University was total. He carried OAU in his heart, and he served with a passion that inspired all who worked with him.” Professor Bamire highlighted Oyeweso’s tenure as one of peace-building, academic excellence, and administrative harmony, praising his role as a mentor and bridge-builder. The university also lauded his contributions to national scholarship, saying his historical writings and administrative legacy will continue to guide OAU, and confirmed that he will be buried today according to Islamic rites.
