Reps urge FG to rescue Jonathan trapped in Guinea-Bissau

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently deploy diplomatic measures to secure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan and other Nigerians trapped in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup.

The House of Representatives on Thursday urged the Federal Government to activate all diplomatic channels to ensure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is currently trapped in Guinea-Bissau after a military coup halted the nation’s electoral process.

Jonathan, in the country on a joint AU-ECOWAS election observation mission, was highlighted by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere for his extensive international monitoring experience, noting that “currently, he is in Guinea-Bissau due to the coup.”

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu described the situation as “an urgent matter,” while Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda stressed that the protection extended to Jonathan must also cover all Nigerians affected by the crisis, saying, “The importance we attach to his life should also apply to every other Nigerian, whether at home or abroad.”

The motion was adopted, urging intensified diplomatic efforts as Guinea-Bissau’s military leadership confirmed it had taken control and suspended the electoral process.
