The match tilted sharply in Dortmund’s favour when Juan Foyth was sent off in the 52nd minute for handling on the goalline, after which goals from Karim Adeyemi and Daniel Svensson completed the rout.
Villarreal had an early effort ruled out for offside and missed chances through Pape Gueye, but the dismissal proved decisive as Dortmund claimed their third win of the campaign.
