DSS DG orders release of wrongfully detained IPOB suspect, awards N5m compensation

The Director General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of a man detained since 2022 over alleged IPOB links and awarded him N5 million compensation after investigations cleared him of wrongdoing.

The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, who was arrested in July 2022 over alleged involvement with the proscribed IPOB, and awarded him N5 million compensation alongside free medicare after investigations exonerated him.

Credible security sources said the move followed the DG’s directive to review all inherited cases to ensure due process, noting that “Nwafor’s case is one of such cases.”

The source added that the gesture reflects Ajayi’s commitment to accountability, explaining that three other Abia men suspected of belonging to IPOB — Udemba, Onyedikachi and Eze — were also released.

“Mr Tosin Ajayi acknowledges that as humans, we sometimes make mistakes… the right thing is to make amends,” the source said, recalling that the DG previously paid N20 million compensation to a Jos-based businessman mistakenly shot during a 2016 operation and recently compensated an Abuja businesswoman with N10 million.
