Pope Leo criticizes Trump’s immigration policies as ‘extremely disrespectful’

Pope Leo XIV criticized President Trump’s immigration policies as “extremely disrespectful” and called for humane treatment of migrants, highlighting concerns over mass deportations of Catholics from Latin America.

According to a report from THE DAILY BEAST, Pope Leo XIV condemned President Donald Trump’s immigration policies during remarks at his Castel Gandolfo residence, describing the treatment of migrants as “extremely disrespectful” and at times violent.

The Pope emphasized that even those living in the U.S. illegally for years should be treated with dignity and through legal channels, rather than indiscriminate mass deportations, many of whom are Catholics from Latin America. Trump’s administration, led by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, has already deported over 527,000 individuals this year and aims to remove nearly 600,000 by year’s end.

The Pope also called for migrants to be allowed to receive communion and praised efforts by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to protect immigrants’ rights, highlighting the moral obligation to treat vulnerable populations humanely.
