Bishop Dunia cautions leaders as kidnappers kill seminarian

Emmanuel Alabi, one of the students of Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, Ivianokpodi, Estako East local government area, who was abducted on July 10, 2025, has been killed.

Alabi, a student at the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary, was killed by kidnappers after spending 95 days in captivity, according to The Nation’s reporting.

Alabi was one of three students abducted by gunmen on July 10, 2025, in the Estako East local government area. The report gathered that Alabi was shot dead in an attempt to escape, shortly after his colleague, Joshua Aleobua, regained freedom on November 4. The third student, Japhet Jesse, had managed to escape earlier.

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi, in a statement signed by Assistant Director of Communications, Fr. Linus Imoedemhe, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Most Rev. Gabriel Dunia, Bishop of Auchi Diocese, called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect citizens and cautioned political leaders against ignoring the worsening insecurity.

Bishop Dunia specifically urged leaders to “prioritise the safety and well-being of the people over political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.”

The diocese concluded its public statement with a call for communal support:

“The Catholic Diocese of Auchi invites all the faithful and people of goodwill to join us in praying for the repose of the soul of Emmanuel Alabi, and for the peace, healing, and security of our people and land.”
