The House of Representatives is considering constitutional changes to hold presidential, governorship, and legislative elections on the same day, a move Speaker Tajudeen Abbas says will cut costs and boost voter turnout.
The House of Representatives has revived a proposal to hold Nigeria’s presidential, governorship, and legislative elections on the same day.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja while receiving a European Union delegation, saying the measure would cut costs, reduce tensions, and improve voter participation.
“Like the single-day election, it is to hold the election of the president, National Assembly membership, governorship, and state house of assembly membership elections on the same day,” Abbas said. “In our own thinking, it will help to reduce our electoral process, particularly on the turnout of voters.”
Currently, presidential and National Assembly elections precede governorship and state assembly contests by two weeks. Critics say the staggered system inflates costs and stretches security.
Abbas said lawmakers were committed to “far-reaching reforms” ahead of 2027, including reserved seats for women and persons with disabilities.
Similar proposals in past assemblies failed, but the House plans to vote on constitutional changes later this month.
