The Federal Government will on Tuesday arraign human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, on a five-count charge over social media posts allegedly aimed at inciting public disorder against President Bola Tinubu.
Court filings sighted by PUNCH Online show that the Department of State Services (DSS) filed the charges on September 16, 2025, accusing Sowore of using his verified X account to spread falsehoods. One of the posts read: โThis criminal @officialPBAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!โ
The charges, brought under Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act 2024, allege that Soworeโs comments were capable of causing a breakdown of law and order. Social media companies X Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. are listed as co-defendants.
Confirming the case, Sowore wrote on Facebook: โThey claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I have somehow committed a set of โnovelโ offences. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow.โ
The case is expected to test the limits of free speech and government regulation of online platforms.
