China aims for 7%-10% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2035

China has pledged to cut emissions 7%-10% by 2035 while significantly boosting non-fossil energy use and renewable capacity.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday announced Beijing’s climate target to reduce economy-wide net greenhouse gas emissions by 7% to 10% by 2035. Speaking via video at the UN Climate Summit in New York, Xi said China will also raise the share of non-fossil fuels in its total energy consumption to over 30% and expand wind and solar power capacity to about 3,600 gigawatts — six times higher than 2020 levels.

“These targets represent China’s best efforts, based on the requirements of the Paris Agreement,” Xi said, noting that meeting them will demand both internal determination and global cooperation.

He emphasized China’s confidence to deliver on its pledges, urging countries to translate climate visions into action. “Climate response is an urgent yet long-term task. Let’s all step up our actions to realize the beautiful vision of harmony between man and nature,” Xi added.
