Remi Tinubu says over N20bn raised from birthday fund to support National Library project

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says more than N20bn was raised through her 65th birthday project to complete the National Library in Abuja.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says over N20 billion has been raised to complete the National Library in Abuja through her 65th birthday legacy project.

Speaking at a lunch with State House correspondents on Tuesday, she said the funds were mobilised through the Oluremi @65 Education Fund instead of receiving cakes, gifts, or adverts.

“Twenty billion, four hundred and fifty-six million, one hundred and eighty-eight thousand, nine hundred and twenty-four Naira, and ninety-three kobo (N20,456,188,924.93) raised,” she announced.

Tinubu rejected claims of political undertones. “I want to clear the air about some people saying it has a political undertone. What is wrong in doing well?”

She said her 12 years on the Senate education committee and her modest upbringing shaped the choice.

Former Anambra governor and Labour Party candidate Peter Obi welcomed the focus on education but faulted Nigeria’s dependence on birthday donations to complete a national institution, calling it a reflection of misplaced priorities.
