Trump begins construction of new $200m White House ballroom

Construction crews have begun work on a new White House ballroom championed by President Trump, intended to host foreign dignitaries and major events.

Mr. Trump announced on the South Lawn last week that the project had started, according to Newsweek. Early work involves clearing trees and digging on the South Lawn. A White House official told The Washington Post the project is in the “preservation stage,” with foliage relocated off-site.

“The White House is one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the world, yet the White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders and other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building entrance,” the White House said in a July 31 statement.

The ballroom is expected to cost $200 million and hold up to 900 guests. Trump said he will contribute personally, alongside private donors, with oversight later from the National Capital Planning Commission.
