Bridge has been left unrepaired for over a year despite promises
A commercial bus conveying passengers plunged into the Namnai River in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State on Sunday after attempting to cross a collapsed bridge. The incident, confirmed via a post by security expert Zagazola Makama on X, occurred in the early hours as the Adamawa Express bus en route to Taraba lost control on the broken section of the bridge.
Eyewitnesses blamed the tragedy on government neglect, noting the bridge collapsed over a year ago without repairs. “We’ve lost many lives here due to this abandoned bridge,” a resident lamented. The exact number of casualties remains unknown as rescue efforts continue.
Taraba State Police Spokesperson Yahaya Suleiman was unreachable for comment. Photos attached to Makama’s post showed the wrecked bus and recovered bodies, sparking outrage over infrastructure failures. Motorists described the bridge as a “death trap,” urging immediate government action.
