“We have approval for at least seven specialist contractors to carry out detailed investigations, designs, and bids under an EPC+F arrangement,” he said.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, says the rehabilitation of Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge will cost about ₦3.6 trillion due to extensive underwater damage. Speaking after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, Umahi disclosed that recent assessments showed severe deterioration of the bridge’s piles and piers from illegal sand mining, erosion, and corrosion.
He noted that rehabilitation costs are now estimated at ₦3.8 trillion, while building a new bridge could cost slightly less. “We have approval for at least seven specialist contractors to carry out detailed investigations, designs, and bids under an EPC+F arrangement,” he said.
The FEC also approved emergency repairs for several bridges nationwide, including those in Taraba, Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, and Lagos. Umahi stressed urgent action, warning that decades of neglect have undermined the bridge’s foundations. The 1990-inaugurated bridge remains Nigeria’s longest and a key transport link for over 20 million Lagos residents.
