“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria… That is a very important distinction.”
Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has said that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is motivated by genuine concern for Nigeria rather than personal ambition.
Speaking on Amazing Africans on Channels Television, Adichie noted, “He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria… That is a very important distinction.”
She contrasted Obi’s intentions with those who seek power for ego-driven reasons. According to her, Obi embodies selfless leadership and accountability. “Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job as a leader… he’s accountable to the people,” she added.
The award-winning writer said her support for Obi stems from his consistency and integrity over the years. “The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of his values,” she stated.
However, Adichie declined to comment on how she would feel if Obi does not secure the presidential ticket, saying, “I don’t want to think about that yet because we don’t know what will happen.”
