Ghislaine Maxwell, the former partner of Jeffrey Epstein, has been transferred to a minimum-security federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed on Friday.
Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence after her 2021 conviction for aiding Epstein in the trafficking and sexual abuse of underage girls. She was previously held at a low-security facility in Tallahassee, Florida, that housed both men and women.
The Texas facility houses only female inmates, most serving time for nonviolent or white-collar crimes. A senior U.S. official told NBC News, “Any false assertion this individual was given preferential treatment is absurd. Prisoners are routinely moved in some instances due to significant safety and danger concerns.”
However, the move has sparked outrage from victims’ families. In a statement, survivors Virginia Giuffre’s family and the Farmer sisters said, “This move smacks of a cover up. The victims deserve better.”
Officials have not disclosed the reason for Maxwell’s transfer.
