Peter Obi donates N20m to prevent expulsion of UNICAL dental students

Peter Obi has donated ₦20 million to UNICAL’s Faculty of Dentistry to help over 400 students facing expulsion due to accreditation issues.

Former Anambra Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦20 million to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) to support over 400 dental students facing potential expulsion due to accreditation issues.

The donation, announced on Thursday, July 24, 2025, aims to address equipment shortages and infrastructural gaps resulting from the university’s over-admission beyond the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria’s (MDCN) approved quota of 10 students per year.

Obi, welcomed warmly during his visit to UNICAL, said, “Education is a right, not a privilege. We must support our institutions and protect the future of our young professionals.”

The ₦20 million donation will fund procurement of dental chairs and lab upgrades needed for MDCN compliance.

University officials say Obi’s intervention will fast-track accreditation resolution.

This comes weeks after his ₦15 million donation to UNN dental students, further cementing his commitment to education and healthcare advancement across Nigeria.
