Court tells FBI, DEA to update Tinubu heroin records report by August 7

Regarding the release of unredacted heroin trafficking records allegedly linking Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to a 1993 case in Chicago.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has directed the FBI and DEA to file another Joint Status Report by August 7, 2025, regarding the release of unredacted heroin trafficking records allegedly linking Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to a 1993 case in Chicago.

Judge Beryl A. Howell issued the order following the agencies’ June 30 request for more time to search and begin releasing documents by December 1.

Aaron Greenspan, founder of Plainsite.org, filed the FOIA lawsuit in 2023, backed by journalist David Hundeyin. Though partial records were earlier released, references to Tinubu were redacted.

In May 2025, Judge Howell ruled for full disclosure. The FBI cited 10,000 pending FOIA requests and limited resources. Greenspan called their position “manifestly unreasonable,” insisting production begin immediately.

While the FBI and DEA preferred an August 14 update, Howell set the deadline for August 7.
