Doctors in Nigeria treated like slaves, says Akwa Ibom NMA

Peter described a recent review of doctors’ allowances as “insensitive and insulting.”

The Akwa Ibom chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has condemned the Federal Government for allegedly subjecting doctors to slave-like conditions.

At a press briefing in Uyo on Friday, NMA chairman Dr. Aniekan Peter said doctors are forced to work over 72 hours without adequate pay. “They remain in the hospital, working, sometimes for over 72 hours. And at the end of the month, they go home with peanuts,” he said.

Peter described a recent review of doctors’ allowances as “insensitive and insulting.” He also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s reported plan to send Nigerian doctors to St. Lucia for ₦3 million monthly, while those at home earn ₦300,000. “Enough is enough,” he added.

He presented a communiqué backing the national 21-day ultimatum and called for a 300% pay rise, immediate withdrawal of the June 27 circular, and settlement of arrears.

Peter urged the government to act swiftly to stop the ongoing brain drain.
