Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, has stirred conversation after revealing his all-time top 10 rap songs, notably excluding Nigerian artistes. The announcement followed an interview on Channels TV where Tuggar defended Nigeria’s refusal to accept Venezuelan deportees, some of whom are reportedly criminals.
Citing overpopulation, he said, “We have enough problems of our own. We cannot accept Venezuelan deportees. You will be the same people who would criticize us if we do.” He emphasized his point with lyrics from Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav: “Flavor Flav has problems of his own / I can’t do nothing for you, man.”
Author Lola Shoneyin reacted humorously, urging the minister to release his rap playlist. Tuggar complied, listing songs from Ghetto Boys, Jay Z, Missy Elliot, and Tupac, among others.
While some praised his taste, others were surprised by the absence of Nigerian rap icons on the list.
Here’d the List
1. ‘My Mind is Playing Tricks on Me’ – Ghetto Boys (1991)
2. ‘Paid in Full’ – Eric B & Rakim (1987)
3. ‘Fight the Power’ – Public Enemy (1990)
4. ‘Monie Luv’ – It’s a Shame (1990)
5. ‘The Story of OJ’ – Jay Z (2017)
