Recurring truck crashes highlight Lagos’ failure to enforce daytime ban

Two people died and three others were injured when a container truck lost control at Balogun Market on June 20, 2025

Two people died and three others were injured when a container truck lost control at Balogun Market on June 20, 2025, reigniting concerns over Lagos State’s failure to enforce a 2012 law banning daytime movement of heavy-duty trucks. Less than 48 hours later, another fatal accident occurred in Iyana Ipaja, killing a minibus driver.

Despite repeated tragedies—including a 2023 crash on Ojuelegba Bridge that killed nine—residents say enforcement remains nonexistent. “They always come inside the market in the daytime, and nobody stops them,” said trader Elisha Eze.

Private driver Ajibola Rufus added, “Most of them don’t even care about other road users.” Commercial driver Wasiu Adedimeji noted, “They don’t obey traffic laws… they don’t even see you.”

Many residents now avoid driving due to fear. “I might just faint,” said Adesunbo Olaoye. Critics say until enforcement begins, the deadly pattern will continue.
