A 16-year-old girl, Joy Afekafe, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2023 murder of a Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna lecturer, Dr. Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu. At age 14, Joy and two classmates, now at large, stabbed the lecturer multiple times and fatally struck her with a wooden stool. Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed ruled, “The prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Dr Mrs Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu is dead.” He added, “I’m satisfied that the prosecution has proved the offences of culpable homicide punishable with death and armed robbery against the convict.” Citing the Penal Code, the judge explained that offenders under 18 cannot receive the death penalty, thus sentencing her to life in custody and ten years for armed robbery. Police said, “Two bloodstained knives… were recovered from the scene.” Joy confessed to conspiring with her classmates after being dismissed as the victim’s housemaid.
