NYSC raises alarm over growing rejection of corps members by employers

NYSC DG lamented that rejections deny corps members valuable experience, while inspections revealed issues such as failure to provide welfare, inhumane treatment.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed concern over the rising rate of corps members being rejected by assigned employers.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Corps Employers’ Workshop in Jos on Wednesday, NYSC Director-General Brig.-Gen Olakunle Nafiu, represented by Deputy Director Gbamisola Salami, urged employers to support corps members’ development.

“Your organisations provide a platform for corps members to apply their skills, gain practical experience, and develop their professional capacities,” he said.

Nafiu lamented that rejections deny corps members valuable experience, while inspections revealed issues such as delays in applying for corps members, failure to provide welfare, and, in some cases, inhumane treatment.

“By working together, we can ensure that the NYSC programme remains relevant, effective, and impactful in shaping the next generation of Nigerian leaders,” he added.

Plateau State Coordinator Jonathan Yavala and Commissioner for Youth and Sports Musa Ashoms also urged employers to create supportive, professional environments.
