Violence in Niger’s Tillabéri region is escalating despite the junta’s promises to curb jihadist attacks.
Since seizing power in July 2023, General Abdourahamane Tiani’s military government in Niger has struggled to contain a growing jihadist insurgency. Attacks across the Tillabéri region have intensified, leading to hundreds of civilian and military casualties. One report noted, “Violence in Niger’s Tillabéri region is escalating despite the junta’s promises to curb jihadist attacks.”
In a controversial move in April, the junta withdrew from a regional anti-terrorism coalition in the Lake Chad area. “Niger’s ruling junta has quit a regional force fighting armed Islamist groups in west Africa’s Lake Chad area,” a source stated.
