The UK has reestablished diplomatic ties with Syria, marking its first ministerial visit to Damascus in 14 years.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy met with President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Saturday, pledging UK support for Syria’s recovery.
“As the first UK minister to visit Syria since the fall of Assad’s brutal regime, I’ve seen firsthand the remarkable progress Syrians have made,” Lammy said.
He affirmed Britain’s commitment to regional stability and announced a £94.5 million aid package, covering humanitarian relief, education, and support for refugee-hosting countries.
Lammy also visited civil defense volunteers known as the White Helmets and met women-led businesses benefiting from UK-backed economic programs.
“The fall of Assad presents an opportunity for the new Syrian government to fully declare and destroy Assad’s evil chemical weapons program,” he added, emphasizing the UK’s support for Syria’s inclusive political transition and efforts to combat irregular migration and terrorism.
