Managers are using AI to decide pay, promotions, and job cuts

ChatGPT leads among AI tools used by managers (53%), followed by Microsoft Copilot (30%) and Google Gemini (16%).

Artificial intelligence is playing a growing role in workplace decisions, from promotions to terminations, a new survey shows.

A Resume Builder survey of 1,342 U.S. managers found that 60% use AI tools to assess their direct reports. Many rely on it for high-stakes decisions such as raises, promotions, and layoffs, despite two-thirds admitting they lack proper training.

“While AI can support data-driven insights, it lacks context, empathy, and judgment,” said Stacie Haller, chief career advisor at Resume Builder. She warned that AI reflects the data it’s fed — which can be flawed or biased.

Concerns about AI’s role in hiring and firing have prompted legislative action. California State Sen. Jerry McNerney introduced the “No Robo Bosses Act,” insisting, “AI must remain a tool controlled by humans, not the other way around.”
