Iranians stranded without cash as IRGC shuts down banks and internet

On June 17, 2025, widespread cyberattacks crippled Iran’s financial and digital systems.

Bank Sepah, a key institution, was hit hardest—branches closed, ATMs failed, and online services collapsed. “Dear customers, it is not possible to withdraw money… all of Iran’s budget and national resources have been invested in the war,” read one ATM message.

Gas stations reliant on the bank’s payment systems shut down, while debit card services at Ansar and Kosar banks also failed.

Hacker group Gonjeshke Darande claimed responsibility, saying the attack targeted “IRGC financing.” They thanked “brave Iranians,” suggesting insider involvement.

Simultaneously, internet access dropped below 50% in Tehran and Isfahan. NetBlocks confirmed: “Metrics show a collapse in internet connectivity.”

The IRGC has previously cut internet during unrest, notably in 2019 and 2022.

An X post from @IranWire_EN read: “People can’t even check if their money is safe.”

Many believe Iran is approaching a breaking point.
