From ₦350k to ₦700k: How Niger’s ban made rams a luxury for Sallah

A big ram sells for an average of N700,000 as against N350,000 in January, indicating a 100 percent price rise on a year-to-date basis.

Prices of rams have surged by 100% nationwide ahead of Eid-el-Kabir, with traders blaming Niger’s livestock export ban and high demand. A large ram now costs ₦700,000 (up from ₦350,000 in January), while smaller ones sell for ₦250,000 (previously ₦165,000). Nigeria’s reliance on imports from Niger, Mali, and Chad—due to local insecurity—has worsened the shortage.

“The Niger ban and Sallah demand are the main drivers,” said Agege trader Taofik Adewale. “Prices began rising in March and skyrocketed as the festival approached.”
