Total disregard of regulatory procedures
The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended 22 Hausa film series for violating censorship regulations, halting their airing and online streaming. The suspension, disclosed on Monday, May 19, 2025, follows a management meeting and consultations with stakeholders.
According to the Board, the affected titles bypassed the mandatory pre-release approval process. Executive Secretary Abba El-Mustapha approved the action after investigations revealed that the films were produced and distributed in “total disregard of regulatory procedures.”
Board Information Officer, Abdullahi Sulaiman, stated, “The suspended titles failed to comply with requirements mandating all films to be submitted for approval before being produced, marketed, streamed, or broadcast.”
Popular series such as Dakin Amarya, Labarina, Dadin Kowa, and Gidan Sarauta are among those affected.
Producers must submit their works for review between May 19 and May 25 or face legal consequences. The Board urged media and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to assist in enforcing compliance, reaffirming its commitment to upholding cultural values.
