Michael Bolton breaks silence on recent brain cancer diagnosis

“You have to be a cheerleader for yourself.”

Michael Bolton has spoken publicly for the first time about his diagnosis with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. The 72-year-old singer was diagnosed in December 2023 and underwent emergency surgery, followed by a second operation due to infection and rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

In an interview with People, Bolton shared that the illness has impacted his memory, speech, and mobility. Despite the challenges, he remains determined. “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option,” he said. “You’re really quickly drawn into a duel… that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.”

Doctors were able to completely remove the tumour, and Bolton now undergoes bi-monthly MRIs. His most recent scan was clear.

The Grammy winner reflected on his journey with gratitude and resilience. “You have to be a cheerleader for yourself,” he said, adding that the experience gave him a “heightened sense of appreciation.”

Glioblastoma has a recurrence rate of about 90 percent, according to the Glioblastoma Foundation.
