“The prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt,” said Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu before issuing the death sentence.
A Kano High Court on Tuesday sentenced 22-year-old Sagiru Rijiyar-Zaki to death by hanging for the murder of his stepmother and sister.
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, convicting Sagiru of culpable homicide.
The prosecution counsel, Mr. Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that on January 7, 2023, at Rijiyar Zaki Quarters in Kano, the convict stabbed his stepmother, Rabiatu Sagir, in the neck with a screwdriver during a misunderstanding, and strangled his sister, Munawara, using a scarf.
“The evidence presented, including two witnesses and exhibits, established the crime,” said Abba-Sorondinki.
The defence counsel, Mr. Mubarak Abubakar, called the convict to testify, but he denied the charges.
Justice Adamu-Aliyu, after reviewing the evidence, sentenced Sagiru to death by hanging.
The offence contravenes Section 221(a) of the Penal Code Law of Kano State, 1991.
