Nigeria has deported 62 undocumented migrants from Mali, comprising 51 men and 11 women, according to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The migrants were escorted from the NIS headquarters in Abuja to the Illela border in Sokoto by a team of eight officers led by Inspector Mamoud Sadiq.
This action underscores ongoing challenges related to irregular migration across West Africa’s porous borders. Mali’s political instability, marked by a military coup in May 2021, has contributed to increased migration as citizens seek better opportunities abroad.
In 2024 alone, Nigeria deported over 800 illegal immigrants for various immigration infractions, highlighting the country’s efforts to curb irregular migration and enhance national security.
