“Individuals holding a tourist visa are not permitted to perform Hajj, enter or stay in Makkah…” — Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Confusion spread among Nigerians on Sunday following reports that Saudi Arabia’s new visa restrictions could affect participation in the 2025 Hajj.
However, the Federal Government has debunked claims that Nigeria is among countries banned from entering the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabia temporarily suspended short-term visas for 14 countries, including Nigeria, effective April 13, 2025. The move targets business, tourist, and visit visas—but not official Hajj pilgrims.
A NAHCON official clarified: “Countries often tweak visa policies to achieve specific objectives,” urging stakeholders to verify with Saudi authorities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the restriction only applies to tourist visa holders during Hajj season. “Individuals holding a tourist visa are not permitted to perform Hajj, enter or stay in Makkah between April 29 and June 11,” said Alkasim Abdulkadir, media aide to the minister.
Pilgrims registered under Nigeria’s official Hajj scheme will not be affected, authorities stressed, cautioning the public against spreading unverified claims.
