President Donald Trump’s 10% baseline tariff on imports from numerous countries officially took effect on April 5, 2025, at 12:01 a.m. ET. This move is part of the administration’s strategy to address the persistent U.S. trade deficit by implementing a uniform tariff on a wide range of imported goods.

The tariff applies to products from countries like Australia, Britain, Colombia, Argentina, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Goods in transit before the implementation date may qualify for a 51-day grace period, provided they arrive by May 27, 2025.

Additionally, the U.S. is set to impose higher “reciprocal” tariffs from April 9, 2025, targeting countries accused of engaging in unfair trade practices. China, for instance, will face a 54% tariff, while Vietnam will face a 46% tariff.
